As you are all aware, now is the busy time in the run up to exams. It is during this time that we get some FAQs concerning access to past exam papers. Below are a few tips for you:

You can access past exam papers via the library catalogue: http://library.dit.ie/

The exam papers are password protected. NOTE: it is a different password to your Student Number and Library PIN. A list of all passwords for remote access to exam papers and databases can be accessed via the exam papers page. Click on the 'usernames and passwords list' link and input your student number and Library PIN when prompted. http://library.dit.ie/screens/exams.html

Search Tips for Aungier Street Students:

Ignore the search box when searching for exam papers. Instead, click on the Recent Exam Papers link which is located just below the search box.
Click on the relevant college link e.g. if you are studying a business subject scroll down to the 'College of Business, Aungier St.: examination papers' record and click on the link.
Here you see the past papers are sorted by year. Choose the year you wish to look at.
Here you will see the past papers sorted by course code. Scroll down to find your course code and click on the link.
Exam Papers are then sorted by sessional (Christmas and Summer exams) and supplemental (repeat). Click on the relevant link.
Here you will see the subjects available in pdf form for each class year e.g. 'DT341 1 Acc-Jan.pdf' is for 1st year, 'DT341 2 French-May.pdf' is for 2nd year.
Click on the relevant subject and print or save the pdf.

Proquest has set us up with a trial to Vogue Archive. “The Vogue Archive contains the entire run of Vogue magazine (US edition), from the first issue in 1892 to the current month, reproduced in high-resolution colour page images.

Every page, advertisement, cover and fold-out has been included. The Vogue Archive preserves the work of the world's greatest fashion designers, stylists and photographers and is a unique record of American and international fashion, culture and society from the dawn of the modern era to the present day.

This archive is an essential for Fashion, Photography, Gender studies, Design, Textiles, and Business (branding, marketing, talent management) students and researchers.

Irish Marketing companies responding quickly to QR codes!

There was an interesting article in the Irish Times over the weekend entitled How QR is raising the barcode in Marketing. Ireland is seemingly the 10th biggest user of these Quick Response codes - two dimensional barcodes that can be quickly scanned with a mobile phone. Marketing people are cottoning on to their potential in a big way. QR codes are popping up in Irish newspapers and magazines, at Dart Stations and bus shelters, on TV and on web pages. Estate agents, for example, are using them in newspaper listings where scanning a property's QR code can lead directly to further information online. As well as product details, QR codes can link to video, contact details/business cards, Facebook and Twitter pages amongst other things. See article HERE

All post-graduate dissertations and theses received by the library are now available for reference use only on the upper floor of the library. Items are shelved alphabetically according to course title and each course has a distinguishing colour code on the spine.
Undergraduate dissertations are also on the upper floor but have been moved closer to the computer area. These are also colour coded for easy access.
A full list of all dissertations held by the Library is available on the library catalogue at library.dit.ie. To access simply enter dissertations dit aungier street as a subject search.
In addition, all DIT research theses - PhD and M.Phil – are available in full text on Arrow, the DIT Institutional Repository at http://arrow.dit.ie. Search under Theses or by author/title.

The latest quarterly Business Sentiment survey from IBEC found that the majority of companies are planning to extend pay freezes into 2012 with a small minority planning further reductions in pay. The majority of firms remain confident in the trading outlook, however, and many intend to hire new staff within the next 3 months. Topping up your account and printing at Aungier Street

The Print/Copy Service at all DIT Libraries is provided by Ricoh Ireland Ltd. They also provide printing facilities throughout each campus building. Please see below details on how to top up your account and print outside of the library as well as contact support details.

1.Topping up your account. As well as using the top up kiosks in the library, it is also possible to top up your print account online using debit or credit card by logging onto www.ricoh-epay.ie and following on-screen instructions. The minimum top up amount is now reduced to €5 and is available to use 24/7.
Alternatively you can top up by phone at 1518 444 382 to the value of €3 - (It is probably better to use this method only in emergency cases as costs from mobiles can be expensive and vary depending on service provider). From a landline the service costs the same as a local call.

2. Follow-me Printing With the 'follow-me printing'service in place throughout DIT, you have 2 hours from the time you send your print job to release it at any printer throughout the college.
For colour jobs, there is an additional colour printer located in the School of Business on the 4th floor.

3. Customer Support As part of the managed print service provided to DIT, Ricoh has a dedicated Customer Support person on site who can help you with any queries you have regarding the print service. He can be contacted by email on ditsupport@ricoh.ie or on mobile 086-2832008.

Login to www.dit.ie/library. Select Databases and Irish Times from the A-Z Link. Select e-paper from the toolbar and click on the image of the e-paper to access.

The e-paper can also be accesssed from outside of DIT by logging in with your staff or student number and Library PIN. Our subscription is limited to 5 simultaneous users so you may be advised to try again if this limit has been reached.

The Irish Times Archive which dates back to 1859 can be searched both internally and remotely using login and PIN.

Dublin City Public Libraries continues its 2011 Career Direction and Development Programme on Thursday, 9th June, at 6.30pm in the Business Information Centre, Central Library, Henry Street, Dublin 1 with a free workshop given by Jane Downes.

This interactive workshop will look at how to stay on track in the jobs market, while still having an effective plan of action in mind. How can you be more proactive in your job search while maximising your chances of finding employment or changing careers?

Jane Downes is one of Irelands best known Career Coaches and author of “The Career Book – Help for the Restless Realist.” She owns Clearview Coaching Group a Career Coaching and Training business which she established in 2004 following an extensive career working in the area of recruitment and HR consulting.

Trial of the OECD iLibrary

As the trial is IP based, it can only be accessed from computers within the DIT Network. The booklet is aimed at all staff engaged in course design and delivery. Its purpose is to show what information literacy is, how it can be successfully built into courses and programmes of study and how library staff can engage in collaborative partnerships to achieve this. With the growing significance of social media like Facebook, Twitter, blogs etc. several search engines have been developed to search these social conversations. Samepoint, for example, allows you to search across millions of conversations occuring on blogs and social media sites like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and lots more to find out what people are saying about a particular brand, company or topic.
Other similar search engines include SocialMention, Yauba and BoardReader, some of which offer RSS feeds and realtime 'buzz' about your chosen topic.

Did you know that you can renew your books for a further 2 weeks if nobody else is looking for them? Library staff will do this for you on request or you can use the online renewal facility by following the steps below:

* Login to your account at: http://library.dit.ie/patroninfo.html
* You will need your ID number and PIN
* Click on 'Items currently checked out'
* Select items to be renewed and click on 'Renew Selected items' tab
* or Click on 'Renew All' tab

Please note the following:
Books and other items can only be renewed once.
An item cannot be renewed if another user has placed a hold on it.
If the item is overdue it must be returned to the library and fines paid. If nobody else needs it you can then take it out again.

In these cases library staff will be happy to help you.

Delays in receiving Loans from the British Library

In common with most academic libraries in Ireland, Aungier Street Library applies to the British Library (BL) for the vast majority of its' Inter-Library Loan requests. This commercial service from the BL normally works well and material is received in reasonable time.
The BL reported in January that, as a result of asbestos being found in their Document Supply Centre buildings, certain parts of their collection are temporarily unavailable for lending or copying. They committed to seeking out alternative suppliers where possible, but warned of inevitable delays. This has indeed proved to be the case and we would like to apologise to those of our users whose requests are still outstanding. We are making every effort to find alternative solutions and hope to clear the backlog as soon as possible.

Emerald takes over Social Sciences publisher

Emerald Publishing has just announced its’ takeover of Pier Professional, a UK based publisher of Health and Social Care journals, thereby adding 23 new journals to its social sciences section. These journals will gradually be added to the Emerald platform and will be accessible through the library’s subscription to Emerald Management Xtra. Survey of over 50's reveals major potential for Irish business

A survey by Amarach Research of 500 adults aged 50+ in January and February this year, reveals many untapped opportunities for Ireland's product and service providers. According to the survey the 1.2 million people over 50 spend more on holidays, new cars, restaurants and home improvements than any other section of the population. 80% of this group own a mobile phone and 1 out of 2 buys a newspaper every day. They are enthusiastic media and technology consumers. 4 out of 10 use the Internet regularly to buy insurance, books and to book flights amongst other activiites. 29% of the group are on Facebook. The majority of those surveyed claim to be happy, relatively affluent and confident about their futures. 77% of them are not happy with their treatment in the media, however, and believe they are portrayed as 'vulnerable' or 'unable to cope'. Mature Students and the Library

Returning to study, after being out of the education system for some time, is daunting for anyone. Mature students, in particular, can find it tough. They may be working full time or have onerous commitments outside of college. They are very often short of time and find it hard to learn about and fully utilise all of the college resources available to them.

Printing from Laptops now available in Aungier St. Library

You can now print from any laptop running Windows 2000, Vista, Windows XP, Windows 7 and Mac OS10.6 in the library and in all the Wifi zones throughout the Aungier Street campus. All you need to do is download the necessary drivers. Full instructions are available HERE

Self Service a huge success!

Students have taken to self service at Aungier Street Library like the proverbial ducks to water. Statistics for January 2011 show that, of the 5,239 items checked out during that month, 3,581 of them were through the self service machines. This works out at 67.2% of total checkouts. Average use of non-RFID self service machines in other libraries is approximately 35% so this is definitely a success story. A very well done to all involved and particulary to Fiachra Mangan as manager of the self service project and to library staff for promoting the service and teaching users how to do it for themselves!

Staff who have recently received new "smart" ID cards will know that these cards are also their Library Cards for entering, borrowing, using self service and photocopying services in the Library. One change that has come about as a result of these new cards is that, to access library e-resources from outside of DIT, staff must now enter their staff number as their username. You can use the same PIN that you have always used. Please contact the Library at 3068 if you have any problems with the new system.

New Staff ID/Library Cards

DIT has recently introduced new 'smart' ID cards for all staff. These ID cards also serve as your library card and may be used in any DIT Library. The new card makes getting into Aungier Street Library a lot easier too. Just wave the card at the top of the turnstile! You can also use it to issue and return books at the Self Service machines. Once you have your new card it takes 24 hours for your 'record' to transfer over to the library system so you cannot use the card to borrow for that period. If you have books out on your old card, they will be transferred to the new one.

How to apply for a Staff Card
Go to the Registrations Office at either:

to have your photograph taken and your card produced.

New Opening Hours at Aungier Street Library

FAME is migrating to a new interface. Their representative Georgie will provide training in New FAME from 11.00 - 12.30 on Thursday 24th February in Library Training Room 1. Here is Georgie's outline of what the session will cover: "The aim of the fame training will be to take you through the new interface. I will guide you through the additional sections in a company report and take you through the data, how to format the report to contain the data you require, how to build searches from the new layout and how to build an analysis along with all the additional features."

Training is open to academic and library staff. Interested research students should contact their supervisor who can book them on the session.

Statutes of the United Parliament Donation

Aungier Street Library has received a donation of an almost complete set of public general statutes passed by the Parliament of Great Britain and Ireland between 1838 and 1900. The Statutes were donated by Mr. Fergal Mawe and will be known as the Mawe Collection. They are shelved to the right of the main service point in the Library.

Pre-exam Opening Hours at Aungier Street Library

Consumers react to the Recession

Mintel, as part of their Ireland Horizons Series, has released a new report entitled Reaction to the Recession: Changes in Shopping Behaviour - Ireland. The report shows that the recession has had a profound impact on Irish consumer spending and shopping habits. Only 29% of NI and 23% of ROI consumers claim that their spending habits have NOT changed to any great degree over the past 12 months. In particular, consumers have reduced their discretionary spending and opted for discount retailers far more than previously. "I'm a final year Marketing student in Aungier Street and I'd just like to give you some VERY positive feedback on your new subscription to Searcher the cross-resource searching tool. We have a 20,000 word dissertation to write and I cannot tell you how long I have spent clicking in and out of databases searching for articles. But now thankfully Searcher has answered my prayers and has significantly lowered the time I am spending searching for articles and has also revealed databases that are helpful to me that I was not previously aware of! So thank you very very much for this new aid, it's made this year a little easier!"

Forfas 2009 Business Survey of Economic Impact now available

The Forfas Annual Business Survey of Economic Impact for 2009 is now available. The survey provides data on

sales
exports
payroll costs
purchases of materials and services and percentage that are purchased in Ireland
training costs

for Enterprise Ireland, IDA, Shannon Development and Udaras na Gaeltachta client companies.

The figures show a decline in sales for manufacturing and internationally traded services for both Irish and foreign owned companies, with manufacturing companies suffering the largest reduction.

What do employers want?

EBSCO has provided us with free access to their Political Science Complete database until 21 December. The database covers topics such as comparative politics, humanitarian issues, international relations, law and legislation, NGOs, and political theory.

This database should be of particular interest to MA in Public Affairs and Political Communications students, and to anyone doing political science research.

Try Searcher and search up to 16 library databases at once

DIT Library Services has taken out a one year subscription to Searcher, a cross-resource searching tool.
Searcher allows users to search across up to 16 library databases at once, with more databases to be added shortly. A list of the databases covered is available on the Advanced Search page. Results are ranked by relevance and are clustered by author and topic. By creating a user profile, users can also set up alerts and customised searches.
