How do I Find a Specific Journal Article?

Has your lecturer given you a reading list including specific journal articles? Or have you found references to journal articles that you think would be helpful for your assignment or dissertation? Finding a specific article requires a different approach to finding articles on a topic.

Let's say we want to find the following journal article:

Delany, Ed (2000) Strategic development of the multinational subsidiary through subsidiary initiative-taking, Long Range Planning 33 (2), 220-44.

From the library website, choose SearchAll - Library Resources.

Enter the first few words of the article title, i.e. strategic development of the multinational subsidiary in the search box. A link to the full text of your article should appear in the first few results.

Occasionally SearchAll won't find the article, even when DIT Library Services does subscribe to it.

In that case, choose E-Journals from the library website and enter the title of the journal (not the title of the article) in the search box. This will link you in to the electronic version of the journal in which the article you're searching for is published. You can then browse to the specific volume, issue number and page that you're looking for.

Of course, if you're looking for articles on a topic, rather than a specific article, you should use the Library Databases. See the Business Subject Gateway, the Law Subject Gateway, or the Media and Journalism Subject Gateway for information on relevant databases for your subject area.

Group Study Rooms

For the convenience of DIT students working on group projects and assignments, Aungier Street library has 8 collaborative study rooms, 4 on each of the 2 floors occupied by the library. Rooms on the upper floor accommodate larger groups than those on the lower floor. To avail of these rooms, a self-booking system is in operation. The demand for these study rooms far exceeds supply so bookings are restricted to one hour per group per day. On behalf of your fellow students – please limit your group bookings to ONLY One hour per day.

How do I join the library?

Students automatically have a library account the next working day after their student card is printed. You can get your student card from Student Services once you are registered. Remember, it's the printing of the card that triggers the creation of a library account, and your student card doubles as your library card.

DIT staff members also automatically have a library account the next working day after their staff card is printed. Staff ID cards can be collected from Student Services.

Retired DIT staff, members of the Graduate Network and some other individuals can apply to become External Readers, i.e. external members of the library.

Swets error message can be ignored

Some of you have reported receiving security-related error messages when trying to access electronic journals provided by Swets (see the journal Journalism - Theory Practice and Criticism, for example).
We hope to have this fixed early next week, but in the meantime it is safe to click through the error messages to access the article/e-journal you're looking for.

Off-Campus Access to E-Books, E-Journals, and Databases

Remember, you can access the library's e-books, electronic journals and academic databases from off-campus once you have a library account. (Your library account is created the next working day after your student card is printed.)

During the past 2 weeks, we have had problems with remote access to Emerald. For these 2 weeks, We had to come up with a workaround and this did the job for us. Good news -- the usual way of getting into Emerald has been restored: Your DIT email login details is what you need.
