Best of both worlds: Bringing Google Scholar and Library Subscriptions Together

One problem with using Google Scholar to try to find academic journal articles is that many of the results aren't freely available online - you have to have a subscription to the journal in order to access the full text of the article.

However, it's really easy to set up Google Scholar to search DIT Library's subscriptions, and to link you quickly into the article you need if it's one the library subscribes to.

To do this, just click on the Settings link in Google Scholar. Choose Library Links and enter Dublin Institute of Technology in the search box.









Click on the Save button and this will add a Find@DIT link to your results lists in Google Scholar.

You'll have to login with the usual Off-Campus Access authentication details, or else use a campus computer in order to access the article via the Find@DIT link.

How to Find a Specific Journal Article

Has your lecturer given you a reading list including specific journal articles? Or have you found references to journal articles that you think would be helpful for your assignment or dissertation? Finding a specific article requires a different approach to finding articles on a topic.

Let's say we want to find the following journal article:

Delany, Ed (2000) Strategic development of the multinational subsidiary through subsidiary initiative-taking, Long Range Planning 33 (2), 220-44.

From the library website, choose SearchAll - Library Resources.

Enter the first few words of the article title, i.e. strategic development of the multinational subsidiary in the search box. A link to the full text of your article should appear in the first few results.

Occasionally SearchAll won't find the article, even when DIT Library Services does subscribe to it.

In that case, enter the title of the journal (not the title of the article) in the search box

on the library's homepage and choose Journal Title from the dropdown box.

 
This will link you to the catalogue record(s) for the journal, which indicates whether the journal is available in print and/or electronically, and provides a link to the electronic version of the journal in which the article you're searching for is published. You can then browse to the specific volume, issue number and page that you're looking for.

Of course, if you're looking for articles on a topic, rather than a specific article, you should use the Library Databases. See the Business Subject Gateway, the Law Subject Gateway, or the Media and Journalism Subject Gateway for information on relevant databases for your subject area.

Swets error messages fixed

We advised in our blog post on 26 September that the security-related error messages that some of you had reported receiving when trying to access electronic journals provided by Swets could be ignored.

The technical issues causing these error messages have now been resolved, so you shouldn't receive them any more.

Swets error message can be ignored

Some of you have reported receiving security-related error messages when trying to access electronic journals provided by Swets (see the journal Journalism - Theory Practice and Criticism, for example).
We hope to have this fixed early next week, but in the meantime it is safe to click through the error messages to access the article/e-journal you're looking for.

Access to All Library Resources Restored

Thanks to our colleagues in Information Services, work on the library server has finished ahead of schedule.

Access to all library resources, both on- and off-campus, has been restored.

Some Library Resources Unavailable on Wed 2nd July

Due to essential maintenance on the library server, electronic journals, e-books and some library databases will not be available off-campus on Wednesday 2^nd July. The library catalogue and your MyLibrary account will be unavailable both on- and –off- campus.

All databases will continue to be available on-campus, from within DIT’s network.

Business Source Complete, Emerald and Science Direct will continue to be available outside DIT too.

Aungier St library will still be open as usual. You will still be able to borrow and return books at the library’s Service Point.

Free Access to All Palgrave Macmillan journals during March 2014

Palgrave Macmillan is offering free online access to all its journals for the month of March. This includes all current and archival content for their Business and Management, Economics,Finance, Marketing,  Politics and International Relations, and Social and Cultural Studies journals.

No login is necessary to access these journals for free until 31st March.

Off-Campus Access to Library Databases

Our guide to off-campus access to the library's databases, electronic journals and e-books is available on the  Aungier Street library website.

As you'll see from the guide, when accessing databases, electronic journals and e-books from outside DIT's network you will be prompted to authenticate in one of two ways:

1. If you see a BLUE login screen, log in with your staff/student number and your DIT email password (initially your date of birth in ddmmyyyy format).

2. If you see a WHITE login screen, log in with your staff/student number and Library PIN. You create your Library PIN for yourself. 

 
There is a "Forgot your PIN" link if you already have a Library PIN but have forgotten it.

Wiley-Blackwell is offering free online access to some of their more popular business and management articles.

DIT Library Services has subscriptions to most of the journals in which these articles appear, but by clicking on this link you can link directly to the most popular articles in management, HR, industrial relations, small business and entrepreneurship, corporate social responsibility, marketing, innovation, operations management, and business finance, and view each article's impact factor.

DIT Library Services also has electronic access to the Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences via Business Source Premier from 1997 to July 2009.

DIT's Print Journals Now Listed in E-Journal Portal

DIT library services' holding of print journals are now included in the library's E-Journal portal .

This means the E-Journal portal is now a "one-stop shop" for determining whether the library owns a particular title in either electronic or print format.

For example, a search in the E-Journal portal for Journal of Marketing Management now indicates that, as well as being available online via Business Source Premier from 1985 to one year ago (due to the publisher's 1 year embargo), the title is also available in print in the library right up to the August 2010 issue.

This turns what was a for many users a two-step process (searching the E-Journal portal first, and then the Library Catalogue) into one easy step in the E-Journal portal.

Electronic access to Journal of International Business Studies

Following several queries from our users about electronic access to the Journal of International Business Studies we've clarified with the publishers that our subscription entitles us to a rolling 4 year period of access. This means we currently have full text electronic access from 2006-2010.

The library also had a print subscription to the Journal of International Business Studies from Spring 1990 to December 2008. These issues are shelved at call number 650 in the journals collection, on the upper floor of the library.

Industrial Relations News (IRN) Online- new subscription

The Library has recently organised a DIT-wide subscription to Industrial Relations News Online. To access, login to http://www.irn.ie with our new username and password. Please ring Allison at 3266 or Israel at 7167 for the login details.

Access is only available from within DIT's network.
