New Books with an Irish Interest

The Library has recently received a diverse range of new books with an Irish slant. These include Michael Clifford's Bertie Ahern and the Drumcondra Mafia; Occasions of Sin: Sex and society in Modern Ireland by Diarmaid Ferriter and Mna na hEireann: women who shaped Ireland by Nicola Depuis. Other new arrivals particularily relating to women are The Minority Interest: women who succeed in the Accountancy profession by Pat Barker of DCU and Black Women in White America a fascinating documentary history edited by Gerda Lerner. 2009 Journal Citation Reports

The 2009 data is now available in Journal Citation Reports (JCR) from ISI. There are approximately 700 additional Journal titles with their first Journal Impact Factor. To access login to the JCR from the Library' alphabetical listing of databases at www.dit.ie/library/databases.

Think Tank for Progressive Economists

TASC - the think tank for action on social change - has established "a forum for progressive economists and others commenting on the Irish economy". They say "it is time to reclaim 'economics' by rediscovering the political, social and cultural in 'economics" Check it out here.

In case you haven't found them already those 2 reports are readily available on the web. The Regling/Watson Report -A preliminary report on the sources of Ireland's Banking Crisis is available on the Irish Government website and the Honohan report The Irish Banking Crisis: Regulatory and Financial Stability Policy 2003-8 is available via the Central Bank.

E-Books - New Business Titles and Free Travel Guides

Four new business titles in the BookBoon ebook service may be of interest. Three are in their "Essentials Series" - Essentials of Macroeconomics, Essentials of Marketing Research and Essentials of Marketing Research Exercises. The fourth is a useful introduction to project management entitled Project Leadership Step by Step.
For those of you planning holidays abroad their free travel guide series covering Europe, the Far East and South America, might be worth a look.

Library Summer Services 2010

Once again Aungier Street Library will open from 9.30am to 5.15 pm Monday to Friday over the summer months. Library staff recognise that this will cause difficulty for students with dissertation or assignment deadlines who cannot visit the library during office hours. We are, therefore, again offering a package of services over the summer until September 3rd. which is intended to bring the library to you!

These services include:

Book Postal Scheme: Register with our Book Postal Scheme, use the online library catalogue to identify what books you need and we will send them to your home address. For further information contact: Anne Ambrose at 01- 4023067.

Book Return Bin: This is located just outside of the library door. The Aungier Street building opens from 8.00am to 6.00pm. If it suits, simply drop in your books to the “Blue Bin” and we will look after things from there.

OnLine Reference Service: Need help with sourcing information for your dissertation? Want to know how to use a particular database or e-journal. Contact our Ask a Librarian service. Queries can often be answered straight away but you are guaranteed an answer by the next working day. Our aim is to assist you in any way we can.

Hard-copy Journal Articles: If the article you need is not available online but is in our hardcopy collection – we will make every effort to get it for you.

Electronic Resources: DIT Library Service now subscribes to over 30,000 electronic journals and to all of the leading academic databases. Set yourself up with an access PIN and this vast library is available to you from your home PC. Simply login to the library website to get started. Online guides are available for most databases. If you need assistance in getting set up or in using any of our electronic resources please contact us via the Ask a Librarian service or by ringing us at 01-4023068.

Inter Library Loans: If the items you need– books, journal articles, conference papers, reports - are not available in our collection, we can request them on interlibrary loan on your behalf. Requests should be sent to the InterLibrary Loans Dept., DIT Library, Aungier Street, Dublin 2. This is a fee based service and some books may only be read on the premises. ALCID Cards and Letters of Introduction: If you are a post-graduate student studying at Masters level or higher, we can provide you with an ALCID card. This will enable you to use any or all of the university libraries in Dublin and nation wide for study and reference purposes. We can also provide undergraduate students with letters of introduction to colleges nationwide. For further details and an ALCID application form click HERE. SCONUL Access Scheme: DIT Staff and Research postgrads (i.e., MPhil and PhD students) can also avail of the SCONUL Access Scheme. This allows you to visit, study in, research and BORROW from 180 participating member libraries throughout Ireland and the UK. All Irish University libraries, with the exception of Trinity College Dublin, are members of the scheme. Application Forms for SCONUL Access cards are available at the Main Library Desk. DIT Research Theses now on Dart-Europe

DIT's research theses (PhD & MPhil) are now available through Dart-Europe - the European electronic theses & dissertations portal. The portal is harvesting the theses from our institutional repository "ARROW". DIT is the third Irish institution to join DART-Europe. Dublin City University and Waterford Institute of Technology are already members.

From Challenge to Change: Business Schools in the Wake of Financial Crisis

What is the role of business schools in the recent financial crisis? And what part will they play in the subsequent recovery?

• President and CEO of AACSB International John J. Fernandes believes that education and not regulation holds the key to global prosperity.
• Eric Cornuel, CEO & Director-General, EFMD feels that business schools should question their methods for preparing participants to become innovators and leaders.
• Andrzej Kozminski, Rector of Kozminski University in Poland, warns against the dangers of a "one-size-fits-all" approach.
• Howard Thomas and Alex Wilson, of Singapore Management University and Warwick Business School UK, respectively, assert that we must “find the voice of practice” in research.

Emerald Group Publishing have collaborated with the Global Foundation for Management Education (GFME) to publish a collection of essays from GFME Board Members entitled From Challenge to Change: Business Schools in the Wake of Financial Crisis, available for free online.

As well as offering an insight into current thought from Deans and Directors from the UK, Canada, USA, Poland, Spain and Thailand as well as Directors and Presidents from AACSB and EFMD, it is hoped that the articles will encourge debate about the role of Business Schools during this period of economic uncertainty.
