Irish Times E-Paper: Changes in DIT users' access

The Irish Times has changed its supplier for the Irish Times e-paper, now called the “digital edition”.

As a result, access to the digital edition is now only available to individual subscribers and is not available via IP recognition (i.e. it is no longer available on a campus wide basis).

The library can therefore no longer provide DIT users with access to the digital edition. We have, however, negotiated a discounted individual subscription rate for DIT users of €50 per annum. This represents a 75% discount on the usual cost of €199 per annum.

Anyone wishing to avail of this offer should contact Briege McAtee (bmcatee@irishtimes.com) directly.

This does not affect DIT Library’s subscription to the Irish Times Archive, nor does it affect our access to the Irish Times website.

Stress levels rising for three in ten Irish consumers

Mintel Ireland's 2013 Lifestyles report highlights a significant rise in Ireland’s stress levels as the economic downturn sees financial pressure taking its toll on Irish health. Indeed, revealing an alarming increase in the levels of stress suffered by consumers today, as many as 35% of RoI consumers report a rise in stress levels. Meanwhile, those in the NI are also affected, with 28% of consumers there reporting an increase in stress levels. The report also sees stress driving consumers to food, with around one in seven (15% of NI and 14% of RoI) Irish consumers admitting stress is making them eat more than they should.

You can access Mintel, and the Irish Lifestyles - Ireland - 2013 report, from the library's Business Resources page.

Changes to Harvard Business Review access via Business Source Complete

We have electronic access to Harvard Business Review all the way back to the first issue in 1922 (about 13,000 articles and counting) via Business Source Complete, an EBSCO database. This access has always allowed users to print and/or save all of the articles, as well as to read them on screen.

Since August, the Harvard Business Review is now restricting access via EBSCO’s Business Source databases for 500 of its articles to read-only access. This means Business Source Complete users can still access and read those 500 articles on-screen, but they will no longer be able to either print or save them.

The remaining 12,500 (approx.) Harvard Business Review articles can still be saved and printed from Business Source Complete.

The key things to note are:
  1. The vast majority of Harvard Business Review articles can still be saved and printed out from Business Source Complete.
  2.  The 500 articles that can no longer be saved or printed out can still be accessed and read on-screen.
  3. Aungier St library also has a print subscription to the Harvard Business Review, so students and staff can still photocopy an article that cannot be printed out (subject to the terms of DIT’s Irish Copyright Licence Agreement).

Seth Godin: How to get your ideas to spread

TED is a great resource for free videos of talks on lots of business, media and technology subjects. Examples include marketing guru Seth Godin's talk on how to get your ideas to spread, where he spells out why, when it comes to getting our attention, bad or bizarre ideas are more successful than boring ones, and  Jason Fried's why work doesn't happen at work in which he discusses his radical theory of working: that the office isn't a good place to do it.

B&Q in Examinership

DIY chain B&Q Ireland was placed into interim examinership on 31st January.  Was this due to declining sales, pressure caused by its rental agreements, or both? You can do your own analysis by using FAME to review the company’s financial statements for the last 10 years, and Passport/Global Market Information to look at forecasts for the Irish DIY, Home Improvement and Garden Centre market for the next 5 years.

FAME and Passport/Global Market Information Database are both available from the library’s databases page and Business Subject Gateway. Drop us an email on Ask a Librarian if you need help with using the databases, or to book an appointment with a librarian.
