Call for cases
To celebrate their 21st birthday in 2011, the ECCH European Case Awards will become a global event and a case writing competition has been launched.

Categories
Authors of management case studies are invited to submit entries in two categories:
• Renewable and sustainable energy, technology and development
• New case writer: a first teaching case in any business subject area

Submissions
Cases must have been tested in the classroom, completed after 1 April 2009 and be accompanied by a teaching note.

Submission deadline
30 September 2010

Prizes
The author(s) of the winning case in each category will receive a single prize of €1,500.

Irish Times E-paper now Available

The Library now has 5 concurrent user licenses for the e-paper version of the Irish Times. This digital version re-produces the hard copy paper in exact replica.

Access has been set up through our IP address. Just click on "Today's epaper" from the toolbar at the top of the Irish Times homepage to gain access. See the user options at the bottom of the page to customise the paper style you wish to display.

This access is only available from DIT networked computers. The Library also subscribes to the Irish Times Archive.

Solution to Business Source Premier error message

Some of our users have reported getting an "Application Level Exception" error message in Business Source Premier which prevents them from being able to use the database.

We've found that upgrading to Internet Explorer 7 or using version 3.6 of Firefox solves this problem. You can download IE7 or Firefox 3.6 for free online.

EndNote Desktop - subscription cancelled.

DIT Library Services has decided to end its DIT-wide subscription to the EndNote Desktop Bibliographic Management Software. The cancellation will take effect from April 30th 2010.
EndNote Web will continue to be available to all users through our subscription to the Web of Science databases.
The decision to cancel EndNote Desktop was taken reluctantly - in light of reduced budgets for resources and reduced staffing to provide user support. It follows a recent survey we undertook of DIT researchers which indicated that the level of usage does not merit the substantial investment involved.
The EndNote Desktop licence allows DIT to continue to use in perpetuity the software we have already. The latest Version X3 is now available and will be rolled out to library and laboratory computers over the next two weeks. Staff and students who wish to upgrade to VX3 on their personal computers should contact Fiachra Mangan immediately at 402 7176 or email him at fiachra.mangan@dit.ie

Archives Hub - gateway to research.

The Archives Hub at www.archiveshub.ac.uk provides a gateway to thousands of the UK’s richest archives. Representing over 180 institutions across the country, the Archives Hub is an effective way to discover unique and often little-known sources to support your research.

Use the Hub to instantly scan the archival landscape and bring together diverse sources held in repositories across the country. Historians will find the Hub an essential tool for their research. Postgraduate students can bring that extra unique something to their research. Educators can take advantage of the Hub to introduce students to primary sources for their course-work.

The Hub contains a huge diversity of content, from the archives of industries, institutions and researchers to the letters and manuscripts of writers and poets. New descriptions of archives are being added all the time, so the Hub is always worth a visit.

The Archives Hub is a JISC service, managed and delivered by Mimas, a national data centre at the University of Manchester. Software development work is undertaken at the University of Liverpool.

Lenus joins global science gateway

The HSE's online repository for health research has been accepted as part of the WorldWideScience Alliance, the internet-based global science gateway. This is a considerable achievement and represents an important step in Lenus' innovative programme to increase the profile and effectiveness of research in the Irish health services.

New and improved FAME - have you tried FAME beta?

FAME is a business database that provides access to financial information (P&L, Balance Sheet, ratios, etc.) for British and Irish companies.
Some of you are already enthusiastic users of FAME beta, a new, more user-friendly interface to help users to more easily access the full range of data available in "old" FAME.
Until now, FAME beta was only accessible from within DIT's network, by choosing to try the new beta version of FAME from the Expert Search page within FAME.

Now you can also access FAME beta from outside DIT - just go to http://fame2.bvdep.com/athens.aspx and enter your Athens username and password.
If you don't already have an Athens username and password you'll need to create one while within DIT's network. Contact the library (402-3068) for details on how to do that.
FAME and FAME beta will be run in parallel for the rest of the year.

Firstlaw no longer available on its own

Firstlaw is no longer available from the list of electronic resources available from the DIT library, it has been incorporated into Justis. This move has resulted in an extended coverage of Irish Law resources on Justis. Legal information that was exclusively available from Firstlaw is still there and can be looked up together with what was already available on JUSTIS. Alternatively, one can choose to do an exclusive Firstlaw search on Justis by selecting FIRSTLAW under the Data Sources tab.

Enhanced Case Analysis Documents - Westlaw UK

Enhanced Case Analysis Documents (ECAD)are now available on Westlaw UK. Its now easier to see and analyse the implications, relevance and precedent of each case. Where available, each case now has a list of other cases heard between the same parties but on different points of law. There is also a list of all cases which have been cited by the particular case / being viewed. As part of the ECAD there is also a list of significant cases which have cited the viewed case. With all this, there is no doubt that valuable time will be saved by those doing case law research.
